E-Portfolio: Progressive Education

Teaching and training students is dear to my heart. And this quote from Seymour Papert on the role of the teacher from the video (https://youtu.be/g2tkEhaICy4) has been my watchword. “The role of the teacher is to create the conditions for invention rather than provide ready-made knowledge”. This quote points to me as a guide. This affirms my point to my advanced level students about my role. I am to make them see better, hear clearer, and understand more based on their unique life experiences. I teach sciences and leadership class at Advanced Level. I am there to allow them to scale the curve of innovation and birth new ideas, new ideals, and horizons by internalizing their learning.

Creating a significant learning environment (CLSE) with choice, ownership, voice and authentic learning experiences (COVA) is key to driving active learning (Harapnuik et al. 2018). Allowing students to take ownership of their content puts the instructor as guide and gatekeeper to ensure the students fail cheaply, fail fast, and fail quickly. Students can learn faster, connect with their contents because they birth it. We all love what we create. It is dear to us. We get that emotional connection. As a teacher, I am committed to COVA. Because the goal of true education for me is that my students generate the revelational capacity to solve their own problems in their own way after leaving school.
